Halloweenathon 2023: ‘The Houses October Built’ (2014) Is a Deeply Unsettling Found Footage Horror

On the seventeenth day of Halloween: THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT (2014)

The closest I’ll ever get to a Halloween haunt will be through the movies. And the movies keep proving my point of why I stay the hell away.

I’m not going to say too much about The Houses October Built other than it’s a deeply unsettling installment of the found footage subgenre. Themes include madness and obsession, as well as blurring the line between horror fantasy and reality. How people want more and more extreme experiences but aren’t necessarily prepared for the consequences. The ending is a shocker I’d love to compare to some key films, but it would be a spoiler.

For Jackass fans, there’s a Ryan Dunn lookalike in Mikey Roe, down to his voice and character. Omg I miss that dude so much, which made this an even more poignant rewatch this second time around.

✨Coffin/5 stars. Highly recommend enjoying Halloween safely.✨
