Frost Bites 2024: ‘Jamie Marks Is Dead,’ Is a Deeply Haunting and Profoundly Sad Winter Indie Horror

[Before I fell and fractured my elbow so badly I needed a titanium implant to fix it, I’d already written a bunch of microreviews for my #Horrorthon365 project. I’m just gonna go ahead and post them even though I’m not sure I’ll be able to see this project through the way I’d planned. And if you’re so inclined, you can contribute to my elbow reconstruction fundraiser here.]

I’m fascinated by uberconnected nepotism Barbies who choose acting paths of *most* resistance. Like Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough, whose career mostly consists of strange and grotesque indie films, many of them horror movies. And same goes for Liv Tyler, daughter of legendary Aerosmith frontman Stephen Tyler, who similarly chooses fascinating genre films to display her unique talents, even after her blockbuster success with ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ One of Tyler’s darkly wonderful choice is the unsettling ghost horror ‘Jamie Marks Is Dead,’ where she plays Linda McCormick, a borderline alcoholic whose drunk friend t-bones her car in her trailer’s driveway, paralyzing her from the waist down.

Linda’s son Adam (Cameron Monaghan) is a strange kid, but thankfully invisible at a school filled with bullies. At least until his wealthy classmate Gracie (Morgan Piper) finds the dead body of Jamie Marks (Noah Silver), blue and almost naked, dead by the riverbank. Everyone assumes he’s been murdered. And for the first time in Jamie’s life, people actually care about him. Including Adam, who connects with Jamie’s ghost, building a deep bond of friendship with this troubled spirit in limbo. But Jamie isn’t the only ghost hanging around, as Adam straddles worlds in efforts to help Jamie. Or at least keep the dead kid company.

This is a surprising and haunting story, with beautiful performances to match. A gorgeous, and creepy, and wholly unsuspecting love story. I totally get why Liv Tyler would want to be even a small part of it.

✨Closet/5 stars. Highly recommend being there for people when they are still alive. ✨

Zuzu Zombie’s #Horrorthon365 project is a collection of eclectic genre watchlists with accompanying microreviews to suit the changing seasons. Horrorthon365 was sparked by a gnarly hand injury and carpal tunnel surgery gone awry, hence the flash-style reviews. After a wicked fall at home and brutal elbow fracture that required surgery, posts will be sporadic until I’m healed. In the meantime, browse the entire collection here
