No, Queen Latifah and LL Cool J’s delightful romantic comedy ‘Last Holiday’ is by no means a horror movie. But there is a fundamental American horror at its center: that of the bogus health care system and the resulting bullshit levels of care citizens here receive.
Georgia Byrd (Latifah) is a kitchen sales associate at Kragen’s Department Store, who has big dreams she keeps a tight lid on — like wanting to become a chef — settling for the very least in her simple, single life. That is, until a head injury at work and resulting CAT scan reveals she has a rare brain disease that leaves her just weeks to live.
Georgia has an epiphany at church and decides to quit her shitty job, cash out her $25,000+ in savings, and take her dream trip to Karlovy Vary’s uberfancy Grandhotel Pupp to enjoy the cuisine stylings of world-famous Chef Didier (Gerard Depardieu) before she dies.
Yes, it’s a grim setting. And resonates with me differently after having my own unfortunate medical issues this year with a supposedly simple carpal tunnel surgery gone awry.
But ‘Last Holiday’ is like a warm soul hug thanks to Queen Latifah’s beautiful performance and extraordinary character development as she lives out loud for the first time, under the impression she has nothing left to lose. We should all be so blessed.
✨Butter/5 stars. Highly recommend this film all year round.✨
Zuzu Zombie’s #Horrorthon365 project is a collection of eclectic genre watchlists with accompanying microreviews to suit the changing seasons. Horrorthon365 was sparked by a gnarly hand injury and carpal tunnel surgery gone awry, hence the flash-style reviews. After a wicked fall at home and brutal elbow fracture that required surgery, posts will be sporadic until I’m healed. In the meantime, browse the entire collection here.
